Dr. Chiu Joins the NYBG Team
At the New York Bariatric Group, we pride ourselves in having the best and brightest surgeons in bariatric medicine.
Today we’d like to introduce Dr. Sherard S. Chiu!
He is a talented addition to the NYBG team and will be joining our Fairfield, Connecticut office.
We’d like to share a little bit about him with you.
Dr. Chiu began his education in 2002 at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. After receiving his Bachelor’s of Science in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering and graduating with honors, he left the south.
Heading westward to Alabama, he received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. However, Georgia kept calling.
Dr. Chiu returned to Atlanta for the next 5 years to complete his residency at the Atlanta Medical Center.
Finally, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Dr. Chiu developed his skills for minimally-invasive bariatric surgery. His extensive education and performance has prepared him to be a bright, rising star at the New York Bariatric Group.
Dr. Chiu is not only well-read, but well-published.
Dr. Chiu can claim being the lead author of innovative papers. His team’s article followed the relation between pneumonia and the health of injured patients.
Not only is Dr. Chiu capable with the written word, but is impressive with the spoken word as well. He has been the lead presenter on 7 lectures. When not leading the charge, he is still credited with helping to write several other presentations.
Dr. Chiu is a proud member of several respected professional societies and committees:
- The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons
- The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
- The American College of Surgeons
- The Southeastern Surgical Congress
- The Knoxville Academy of Medicine
In addition to these societies, Dr. Chiu participated in several committees:
- The Infection Control Committee at Atlanta Medical Center
- The Huntsville Community Free Clinic
- Asian-Pacific-American Medical Student Association at the University of Alabama School of Medicine where he acted as the Chairperson
Dr. Chiu has received prestigious awards recognizing his achievements.
The New York Bariatric Group is not the only organization that has recognized Dr. Chiu’s talent and skills for minimally-invasive surgery.
He received several scholarships for his intelligence and studiousness during the course of his education. He has also proven himself to be an exceptional surgeon.
For those of you who are unaware, there is an award that is only given to the best of the best new surgeons. It’s called the Top Gun Award.
“Top Guns” are surgeons who score 99% on the American Board of Surgery In-Training Examination (ABSITE).
Dr. Chiu has received not one, but two Top Gun awards!
