Using the Da Vinci robot allows successful bariatric surgery in high BMI patients to be accomplished with ease. We have performed sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and duodenal switch with the robot. Unlike traditional laparoscopic surgery, the robotic arms have the ability to rotate (very similar to how you can rotate your wrist). A robotic arm can rotate through 360 degrees- well beyond the ability of traditional laparoscopic instruments. This ability allows a surgeon to perform surgery in tight spaces and navigate thicker abdominal walls.

Robotic surgery uses a high definition, 3-D camera which provides more clarity to the surgeon when operating around sensitive tissues.
