Lose Weight and Type 2 Diabetes, Sleep Apnea, and Joint Pain through Weight-Loss Surgery

There are many causes of obesity. Similarly, there are many ways in which obesity affects a person’s overall health. Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and joint pain are just a few examples of obesity-induced comorbidities that can be improved, and even resolved, with the help of bariatric surgery.

To learn more about how you can benefit from bariatric surgery, check out the patient resources on our website, and schedule a consultation. Our offices are open, and our team will be there to support you every step of the way through your bariatric journey.

TYPE 2 DIABETES

According to the American Diabetes Association, individuals experiencing obesity are more likely to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. When there is excess body fat in muscle tissue, individual cells are more likely to become insulin resistant. If those cells don’t respond to insulin, they can’t absorb sugars in the blood necessary for energy and function, leading to diabetes.

Here’s where bariatric surgery can help even more than exercise and dieting.

A recent study showed that patients who lost weight through behavioral changes and weight loss drugs tended to gain the weight back. Patients who underwent bariatric surgery, however, lost more weight and were more likely to achieve better glucose control一in fact, 78% of bariatric patients achieved normal blood sugar levels without needing any support from antidiabetic medications.

SLEEP APNEA

Sleep apnea, a sleep disorder that disrupts breathing, is very common for those struggling with obesity per the American Medical Journal. Excess fatty tissue constricts the body’s airways, and increased weight puts pressure on the chest making breathing difficult. To make matters worse, bad sleep leads to overeating, and makes living an active life even more challenging.

Bariatric surgery, and the associated long term weight loss, solves both of these problems. A study published in the National Library of Medicine reported a 27% reduction in sleep apnea 12 months post-surgery; sleep apnea was resolved completely in 45% of patients, and resolved or improved for 78%.

JOINT PAIN

For every extra pound carried, your knees withstand 4 pounds of pressure. Over time, excess stress on the knees and other joints can lead to osteoarthritis, a condition that causes pain and decreased mobility. Furthermore, obesity is known to cause systemic inflammation that adds to joint discomfort. Luckily, bariatric surgery helps with joint pain too. A study published on Science Daily found that 57% of bariatric surgery patients with serious mobility issues no longer had such issues after surgery. 70% of bariatric patients with severe knee and hip pain found their joint specific pain and dysfunction alleviated after weight loss surgery.

Robert's success story

I was tired of the way I looked. I was tired of the way I felt.

I knew if I didn't change something soon, I was going to be in a lot of trouble. The consultation process was a lot easier than I expected. I was met with open arms. I was treated like I was the only patient here. Not only did they answer all of my questions, they had questions for me to make sure I was the right candidate for the surgery. After surgery and that weight started dropping off, my life started changing for the better.

Eileen's success story

It saved my life.

The driving factor behind me getting my procedure was that I couldn't get up off the floor with my granddaughter. That was my why. That was my big reason for having this surgery done. After surgery, it was a little bit of a struggle with what to eat. What you put in your mouth that you don't even think about. You don't think about what you're eating or how you're eating and portion size. It's what I do now every single day. The procedure has changed my life in so many ways. It saved my life.
