Bariatric surgery is more successful at putting type 2 diabetes into remission than medications and lifestyle changes, according to a recent study from Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
This is hopeful news for those who struggle with obesity and type 2 diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 34.2 million Americans have type 2 diabetes. Obesity is a significant contributing factor in the development of the chronic condition. Approximately 90 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are in the weight categories of Overweight or Obese.
BARIATRIC SURGERY AND TYPE 2 DIABETES STUDY
Researchers conducting the study published in Diabetes Care followed 316 patients with type 2 diabetes to determine the effectiveness and long-term results of bariatric surgery.
Data showed that more than 37% of patients who had weight-loss surgery achieved lasting type 2 diabetes remission 3 years later. Even when patients were provided nutritional education, exercised, and given the newest diabetes medications on the market, only 2.6 percent achieved diabetes remission during the study.
This is the largest study to date evaluating bariatric surgery as a treatment for type 2 diabetes. Additional patient outcomes included glycemic control and comorbidity reduction.
"This study is very encouraging because it reinforces the fact that bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for type 2 diabetes. I am hopeful that as more studies like this are published, more physicians will refer their patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes to bariatric surgeons for the help they deserve," says Dr. Angela Glasnapp, New York Bariatric Group Surgeon.
