Dr. Alexander Abkin is an award-winning bariatric surgeon in New Jersey who specializes in minimally invasive weight loss surgery. He has performed over 11,000 bariatric procedures.
Board certified general and bariatric surgeon since 1997, Dr. Abkin specializes in gastric band surgery, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, revision procedures and more.

In 1999 Dr. Abkin was among the first surgeons in New Jersey to perform Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass and LAP-BAND®. Dr. Abkin was the first in the North East to implement the REALIZE™ Band procedure in 2007. In addition, he is one of only 30 surgeons selected in the country to train other doctors in the use of that device. Dr. Abkin was the first surgeon on the East Coast to offer Single Incision Gastric Bypass in 2009. Dr. Abkin was also one of the first surgeons to offer the ReShape™ intragastric balloon, approved in July 2015 by the FDA.

Dr. Abkin is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Dr. Abkin is medical director of bariatric surgery at Saint Clare's Dover Hospital and Hackensack Meridian Health JFK Medical Center. Under the leadership of Dr. Abkin, the JFK For Life Bariatric Surgery program has been recognized as a Center of Excellence in Bariatric surgery by Cigna, the ACS and the ASMBS. He has been honored by his medical colleagues as a “Top Doctor” in NJ Monthly Magazine each year since 2007.

I had the gastric bypass. I am Type 2 Diabetic and I wanted to gain control of my sugar. I hit my goal weight in about 5 and half months and I feel fabulous. The procedure has completely changed my life for the better because it has empowered me as a middle aged woman that I can really do everything and anything that I want to do. The driving factor behind me getting my procedure was that I couldn't get up off the floor with my granddaughter. That was my why. That was my big reason for having this surgery done. After surgery, it was a little bit of a struggle with what to eat. What you put in your mouth that you don't even think about. You don't think about what you're eating or how you're eating and portion size. It's what I do now every single day. The procedure has changed my life in so many ways. It saved my life.
