At New York Bariatric Group, every obesity surgeon and member of our team is dedicated to providing our patients with a compassionate, comprehensive, and multi-disciplinary program for treating the disease of morbid obesity. One facet of our commitment is our pursuit of exceeding standards of the highest quality, specifically our being named as a Center of Excellence.

What a Center of Excellence Means

With our patients and their success in mind, the leaders of New York Bariatric Group designed a program that was awarded the designation of Center of Excellence (COE) by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). The ASMBS is the largest association in the world for bariatric surgeons, and it focuses on patient success and safety. The COE designation was created to evaluate programs components, outcomes, and statistics. New York Bariatric Group was deemed to be a Bariatric Center of Excellence, fully accredited by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Surgical Review Corporation.

The Reasoning Behind COE

According to a report released in 2007 by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the number of bariatric surgeries grew from 16,000 procedures performed in 1992 to 170,000 performed in 2005. Seeing this growth, medical associations were looking for ways to promote patient safety. With clinical evidence that the most experienced and best-run bariatric surgery programs have the lowest rates of complications, the Center of Excellence program was created.

What COE Means to Us

To earn a Center of Excellence designation, New York Bariatric Group underwent a series of site inspections during which our surgical processes were closely examined and data on our patients’ results was collected. Receiving this designation is a source of pride for us. It is a distinguished honor that recognizes our adherence to strict standards of excellence in performance, quality, patient satisfaction, and successful surgical outcomes for our bariatric patients.

Additional Quality Measures

Recently another quality program was introduced, known as the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). This is a relatively new program that focuses on weight loss surgery patients receiving high quality care by accrediting surgery centers. At New York Bariatric Group, we operate at multiple MBSAQIP-certified hospitals.

The driving factor behind me getting my procedure was that I couldn't get up off the floor with my granddaughter. That was my why. That was my big reason for having this surgery done. After surgery, it was a little bit of a struggle with what to eat. What you put in your mouth that you don't even think about.
