Why Robotics In Bariatric Surgery?

However, for patients with a high BMI (over 55), the abdominal wall becomes significantly thicker and makes traditional laparoscopic surgery much more difficult. Using the Da Vinci robot allows successful bariatric surgery in high BMI patients to be accomplished with ease. We have performed sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and duodenal switch with the robot. Unlike traditional laparoscopic surgery, the robotic arms have the ability to rotate (very similar to how you can rotate your wrist). A robotic arm can rotate through 360 degrees- well beyond the ability of traditional laparoscopic instruments. This ability allows a surgeon to perform surgery in tight spaces and navigate thicker abdominal walls.

Robotic surgery uses a high definition, 3-D camera which provides more clarity to the surgeon when operating around sensitive tissues. The robot allows more control over small movements and allows the surgeon to operate with more precision. Using the cutting-edge technology introduced by the robot, we have expanded the types of patients we can treat.

Dr. Chipman, our robotic surgeon, performs the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch using the robot. This procedure provides excellent and durable weight loss for patients with very high BMI’s (over 55). Our robotic surgeons are fellowship trained and certified.
