A new study revealed that weight loss after bariatric surgery is linked to a dramatic drop in cancer risk. Patients who lost significant weight through bariatric surgery were 32 percent less likely to develop cancer and 48 percent were less likely to die of cancer than those who did not have surgery, according to research published in JAMA.
The study looked at more than 30,000 patients: some of whom had bariatric surgery for weight loss, and others who received standard care for their obesity, such as diet and exercise.
66 percent of patients received gastric bypass in which the surgeon divides the stomach into two smaller pouches and reroutes a part of the intestine to both sections, and 34 percent received gastric sleeve surgery, a procedure in which the surgeon removes 80 percent of the stomach.
HOW EXCESS WEIGHT IMPACTS CANCER RISK
According to the CDC, being overweight or obese is linked with a higher risk of getting 13 types of cancer.
- Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus
- Breast (in women who have gone through menopause)
- Colon and rectum
- Uterus
- Gallbladder
- Upper stomach
- Kidneys
- Liver
- Ovaries
- Pancreas
- Thyroid
- Meningioma (a type of brain cancer)
- Multiple myeloma
These cancers make up 40% of all cancers diagnosed in the United States each year.
The CDC says excess weight and obesity can cause changes in a person's body that can lead to cancer. These changes may include long-lasting inflammation and higher than normal levels of insulin, insulin-like growth factor, and sex hormones.
The study found that for people to lower their risk of developing or dying from cancer, a patient needs to lose a considerable amount of weight - more than what a patient could lose from diet and exercise alone.
