42% of Americans are considered obese and according to a new study, they are at greater risk of severe infection, “long-COVID syndrome” and even death from COVID-19.
Achieving and maintaining good health is a top priority for many in the New Year, with weight-loss being a common resolution in 2022. At New York Bariatric Group, we enjoy working with patients as they embark on journeys toward healthy, happy lifestyles. We believe that prioritizing health and wellness is more important than ever, especially as we face the current COVID-19 variant
NYBG has taken pride in sharing need-to-know information with you throughout the pandemic. We write not only to inform you, but to inspire you to learn more about how bariatric surgery can benefit you in 2022 and beyond.
COVID-19 AND OBESITY STUDY
The new study by researchers from Stanford University reveals why people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher are at greater risk for severe COVID infection. The study discovered that the virus attacks fat cells as well as immune cells in fatty tissue. This can cause an inflammatory response in the fat cells leading to an increased risk of severe infection, hospitalization, and even death.
Another startling discovery: obese patients are more likely to suffer from “long-COVID syndrome.” Some of the long term effects of COVID include organ damage, memory and sleep problems, chest and joint pain, fatigue, and shortness of breath. These symptoms can persist long after the infection is gone. Even those who are vaccinated are experiencing breakthrough infections.
