When it comes to the traditional idea of a father, we often see depictions of a selfless, caring provider who ignores their needs for those of their family. As Father’s Day approaches, we’re asking families – and dad himself – to take steps to ensure he stays happy, healthy, and well for many more to come! That’s why we’re providing these tips that everyone can follow this Father’s Day and all year long to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Take time to sleep in.
In our hectic day-to-day lives, it’s easy to forget about the importance of a good night’s sleep; that’s why it’s so important to take advantage of our days off! Getting enough sleep can improve your energy, immune system, and alertness, among numerous other benefits.
Being well-rested has a profound effect on our bodies, even if it’s not always visible to the naked eye. Studies have shown that sleep can help reduce stress levels which lead to an improvement relating to blood pressure; in fact, patients who regularly got over 6 hours of sleep saw a lower heart attack risk than those who didn’t.
Science shows that sleeping well is one of the best things we can do for ourselves, so it’d be silly for the whole family not to get a little extra rest!
Get up and moving, together!
Whether dad works with his hands all day or is sitting at a desk for 8 hours, it’d probably be good for him to get a little exercise on his day off. But on his holiday, who would want to work out? He probably wants to spend time with his family more than anything – so get the whole gang up and moving together!
Consider getting in tons of steps by taking the whole family for a trip to the zoo, especially checking out exotic animals is sure to be exciting for all ages! As an added bonus, you probably will be having too much fun to notice that all the walking that you do counts towards your daily physical needs. If you’d rather spend a day in together, set up a family competition, whether it be a race or a friendly wiffleball match!
If the kids are up for a longer trek, gather everyone for a brisk adventure in nature. By taking a hike as a family, you can make amazing memories, appreciate the beauty of nature, and get your heart rates up. The best part? It’s all a ton of fun!
Grill up some healthy alternatives.
Father’s Day is one of the most popular grilling holidays, according to research by CNN. Why not join in on the fun with some nutritious AND delicious options?
Traditionally, when we think of grilling, certain options come to mind – hotdogs, hamburgers, and corn on the cob. These may be classics, they don’t offer the best in nutritional value. Red meat, although a common source of protein, has a sizeable drawback: high fat contents. Make the switch to a healthier meal by substituting chicken or fish as your main course. They still add protein to your diet without as many added calories. Additionally, they’re easily customized with different rubs and spices, which means there’s something for everyone to enjoy!
When it comes to sides, corn just doesn’t cut it for the health-conscious. It is full of empty calories, meaning that it is high in sugars and carbohydrates. Instead, try tossing some asparagus directly onto the grill. It’ll give this already wonderful vegetable the delicious, smoky flavor of summer – you’ll love the taste and the benefits. It is low in calorie, high-fiber, and is loaded with vitamin K to keep your heart healthy!
If asparagus doesn’t excite your family, roasted cauliflower is another fantastic option. Not only is it versatile, it’s got a ton of vitamin C, promotes good digestion, and can even aid in weight loss! We recommend cutting a bunch in half, drizzling with a little olive oil, and using salt and pepper to season. Then all you need to do is let the grill do the work!
All of these substitutions are so good, we suspect you’ll be using them long after Father’s Day has ended.
Take care of yourself for the road ahead.
Every journey towards living well starts with a commitment to moving forward, one step at a time. Any healthy habit you adopt can help to ensure you’re able to spend time and make new memories with your family for years to come. That’s why we encourage all fathers—and their families—to make healthy choices together!
Try meal prepping healthy lunches for the whole week, taking a brisk walk in the morning, or centering your thoughts with a new stress-relieving meditation routine. Get the family involved by setting aside time every day to go outside and play together or keeping healthier snacks in the house that everyone loves—your bodies will thank you!
Good health is just as important on Father’s Day as it is any other day of the year—but it’s especially easy to remember why our health is so important when we spend time with family. Dr. Sekhar sat down to share his experience as a father and how it strengthens his commitment to living healthy in the video below:
