A Center of Excellence

Drs. Shawn Garber, MD FACS, Spencer Holover, MD FACS and The New York Bariatric Group were awarded the designation of “Center of Excellence” (COE) by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. This certification was initiated by the Surgical Review Corporation and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery to better insure quality in bariatric surgery. The COE designation by this independent review corporation is based on the programs components, outcomes and statistics. The New York Bariatric Group is a designated Bariatric Center of Excellence, fully accredited by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Surgical Review Corporation. Being a Center of Excellence is a distinguished honor that recognizes our adherence to strict standards of excellence in performance, quality, patient satisfaction, and successful surgical outcomes for our bariatric patients. It is an achievement that is earned by only one out of every 300 bariatric surgery centers. As a Bariatric Center of Excellence, we are fully committed to helping you along your journey of discovering a healthier and more fit you. We provide you with the necessary weight-loss tools to assist in this life-changing experience, and we work together to find a program that’s a right fit for you, so you can start living life to its fullest.

According to a report released in 2007 by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the number of bariatric surgeries has grown from 16,000 procedures performed in 1992 to 170,000 performed in 2005. Faced with clinical evidence that the most experienced and best-run bariatric surgery programs have by far the lowest rates of complications, the ASMBS Centers of Excellence program was created to recognize bariatric surgery centers that perform well and to help surgeons and hospitals continue to improve the quality and safety of care provided.

To earn a Center of Excellence designation, The New York Bariatric Group underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes was collected. The New York Bariatric Group and other centers receiving the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation agree to continue to share information on clinical pathways, protocols and outcomes data. Some of the important goals of the COE include:

  • Ensuring consistency of standards worldwide
  • Assisting in development of clinical trials, data analysis, and research efforts
  • Lobbying for health care coverage of bariatric surgery
  • Addressing issues with consumer confidence and concerns
