Smithtown, NY 11787
Telephone: (631) 862-3000
On February 29, 2000 Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHS) purchased the Medical Center then known as St. John’s Episcopal Hospital from Episcopal Health Services (EHS). The Center was renamed St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center after Catherine Benincasa of Siena, Italy who lived in the middle ages and was noted for her work as a nurse, mediator and spiritual leader. Prior to that, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital was in operations since 1966. While not part of the Catholic Health Services of Long Island acquisition, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital also owned the Community Hospital of Western Suffolk (CHOWS) which was located on Route 347 in Hauppauge. CHOWS opened as the Smithtown General Hospital in the early 1980s, was acquired by EHS in 1994, and closed in 1999. With no other hospitals in the vicinity, St. Catherine of Siena has strong market presence in the Smithtown area; primary competitors include Stony Brook University Hospital and Huntington Hospital. Secondary competitors include South Side Hospital.
St. Catherine’s is located on 110 acres on the north shore of Long Island in Smithtown. The campus is comprised of a 318-bed not-for-profit community hospital; a 240-bed nursing and rehabilitation care center; a 298-unit senior housing facility; and a 60,000 square foot medical office building. Our nurses, physicians and support staff are devoted to providing advanced health care in an environment of compassion to out patients, their families and out community.

The new Gramercy Surgery Center was founded in 2006, to provide surgeons with friendly, high-quality, and professional setting to treat their patients. Gramercy Surgery Center is a fully licensed Article 28 facility. Gramercy Surgery Center is also Medicare-certified which means we have to abide not only to state guidelines, but also the federal regulations governing free-standing surgery centers. We can assure our doctors and patients the highest quality in care, service and satisfaction. Our facility offers patients and their families a comfortable, private, and friendly environment, quite the opposite to the disturbing emergency and trauma situations that patients might encounter in a hospital.
Since the opening of Gramercy Surgery Center, we continue to grow and are becoming the most comprehensive Surgery Center in the Tri-State area with programs like Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Pain Management, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Podiatry and Urology.
Gramercy Surgery Center is proud to be the first ambulatory surgery center in New York State to offer bariatric Lap-Band Surgery to fight the obesity epidemic we face as a nation and especially in the New York area. This procedure is a safe and successful measure for people trying to lose excessive weight. As Dr. Shawn Garber, the Associate Medical Director for Bariatric and General Surgery at Gramercy Surgery Center, states, “Lap-Band is an effective tool in helping people take off the weight but it is not the cure. Calories in and Calories out along with the Lap-Band procedure will lead to a success and assist people in their determination to lead a healthier lifestyle.”
All studies consistently prove that with the weight loss, many other conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol all improve greatly. Gramercy Surgery Center is pleased to bring this safe and effective ambulatory procedure to the New York City community.
