Education

Dr. Desai grew up in Columbus, Georgia, a southern city known for its charm. He studied in Chicago at Northwestern University. He completed medical school at Case Western Reserve University where he had the opportunity to train with many of the world’s most innovative physicians at the Cleveland Clinic. He discovered his second home during his residency in New York City. He completed his General Surgery Residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel where he also discovered his passion for minimally invasive GI surgery. He accumulated a significant research background with several publications and presentations in the field of surgery.

Accomplishments

Dr. Desai is an incredibly accomplished surgeon. Following his residency, he completed a fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery as a part of the Scripps Health System in San Diego, CA. He developed unique expertise in bariatric surgery working with the busiest practice in the state of California, the Pacific Bariatric Group, a cumulative experience of over 18,000 bariatric cases. He is trained in robotic surgery and certified to use the da Vinci robot system in his procedures. He also gained unique experience in foregut surgery; he specializes in performing laparoscopic hiatal hernia repairs and anti-reflux procedures. He has developed a unique experience with revisional surgery and utilizes advanced endoscopic techniques. He has been practicing with the New York Bariatric Group for over three years and has served as a guide for numerous patients through their weight-loss journey.

He is certified with the American Board of Surgery and is an active member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Everybody treated me like a king. The day of surgery, I was excited. The hospital couldn’t be any nicer. I went in for surgery. An hour later, I came out a new man. My recovery was awesome. The driving factor behind me getting my procedure was that I couldn't get up off the floor with my granddaughter. That was my why. That was my big reason for having this surgery done. After surgery, it was a little bit of a struggle with what to eat. What you put in your mouth that you don't even think about. You don't think about what you're eating or how you're eating and portion size. It's what I do now every single day. The procedure has changed my life in so many ways. It saved my life.

I think I always grew up identifying myself as less than other people because I was fat. I decided to tackle that and just live my life. I had a sleeve gastrectomy. It changed how I view myself. How I communicate with people. I'm able to be much more of myself and live the life I always thought I should have been living. I am totally comfortable in my own skin.
