How Does Mounjaro Work?

Mounjaro, which is a brand name for tirzepatide, is the very first dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist. This means that it works on both the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptors and the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptors. The medication works by increasing the body’s insulin production and reducing the amount of sugar produced by the liver. This effectively reduces blood sugar levels. Additionally, Mounjaro slows down food as it’s processed through the body, which makes you feel full longer and decreases your appetite. This typically leads to reduced caloric intake, which can result in weight loss.

How Much Weight Can You Lose With Mounjaro?

Although Mounjaro is not technically a weight-loss drug, patients in clinical studies have experienced a significant amount of weight loss. On average, people taking Mounjaro have lost between 12 and 25 lbs. The specific amount of weight lost with Mounjaro will depend on the dosage being taken and the person’s starting body weight. Some patients on the highest dose of the medication (15 mg) have lost up to 21% of their body weight.

How Soon Can I Expect to Lose Weight?

It will take several weeks for most patients to start noticing significant weight loss with Mounjaro in NYC, Long Island, & New Jersey. After 12 weeks of taking the medication, many individuals have lost 5% or more of their body weight.

How Often Is Mounjaro Taken?

Mounjaro is meant to be taken once per week. It should be taken on the same day each week, but the specific time of day does not matter.

How Do I Take Mounjaro?

When taking Mounjaro, be sure to follow all of the directions on your prescription label. Mounjaro will be given to you in a pre-filled injection pen, which you should use to inject yourself once per week in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Ideally, you should rotate the injection site with each dose. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Mounjaro and gradually increase it over time.

Risks and Side Effects of Mounjaro

Patients taking Mounjaro should know that the medication has a boxed warning from the FDA due to its risk of causing thyroid cancer.

Mounjaro has been shown to cause the following side effects in some patients:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Upset stomach
