Gastric Sleeve
How it works:
- Using small incisions in the upper abdomen, the majority of the left part of the stomach is removed
- The remaining part of the stomach is a narrow tube called a sleeve
- This makes the stomach smaller, which provides a number of benefits
Benefits:
- This procedure does not alter the digestive system
- Patients are satisfied after eating significantly less food
- Decreased hunger
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)
How it works:
- The ESG is a minimally invasive procedure using an endoscope to shape your stomach to restrict the amount of food you can eat and feel fuller sooner.
- Reduces the size of the stomach by 70-80%
- This is an outpatient procedure that generally takes about 90 minutes.
Benefits:
- Minimally invasive
- No incisions or scars
- Feel fuller faster to achieve successful weight loss.
- Decreased hunger
Gastric Bypass
How it works:
- The stomach is divided and sectioned off, leaving a small pouch to serve as a new stomach
- The small bowel is divided and joined to the small stomach pouch
- This allows the majority of your stomach and some of the small intestine to be bypassed
Benefits:
- This surgery allows patients to feel full more quickly
- The bypass also decreases calorie absorption because the food is not going through the entire intestinal path
- Decreased hunger
Single Incision Scarless Surgery (SILS)
How it works:
- Using a single incision in the belly button means a virtually scarless procedure
- The SILS technique can be applied to Lap Band and Sleeve Gastrectomy surgeries
Benefits:
- Little or no scarring
- Shorter recovery time
Duodenal Switch
How it works:
- The duodenal switch procedure is performed robotically in one or two stages through several small incisions.
- In the first stage, a surgeon creates a sleeve (similar to a sleeve gastrectomy), removing 70-80% of the stomach
- The second portion of the procedure involves rerouting the small intestine which means that the small intestine is not removed, but changed in position.
Benefits:
- Small incisions
- Decreased calorie absorption because the food is not going through the entire intestinal path. Reduced stomach volume so you feel full more rapidly.
- Decreased hunger
Revision Bariatric Surgery
How it works:
- Gastric Bypass revision will decrease stomach size and provide better results!
- Gastric sleeve can be turned into a duodenal switch or a gastritis sleeve.
- Another option os to have your gastric band removed and perform one of our other procedures such as gastric bypass or gastric sleeve.
Benefits:
- If you had bariatric surgery and your results have not yet achieved your goals this procedure may be an option for you.
- Decreased hunger

Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect to work, when I failed so many other weight-loss remedies?
Surgery provides a controlled mechanism that is with you everywhere you go. While it is still important to make healthy decisions, surgery makes these goals realistic for our patients. Studies show that patients who have bariatric surgery lose more weight than those who only diet and exercise and they are able to keep it off long term. Surgery is a tool.
After bariatric surgery you must change your eating habits and exercise regularly to avoid unpleasant side effects or even weight gain. On average, patients lose between 60 to 80% of their excess weight and keep the majority off for an extended period.
Why should you consider surgery for obesity?
Obesity is a very serious medical disease. Obesity can damage joints, muscles, bones, and internal organs. The chance of heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, infertility, osteoarthritis, venous insufficiency, gallbladder disease, and certain cancers are increased by obesity. There are many social and psychological implications of being obese, such as prejudice and feelings of depression. Recent published studies show that severely overweight individuals have a life expectancy of 10 years less than non-obese members of the population.
The National Institutes of Health has determined that surgery is the only effective long-term means of weight loss in patients that suffer from morbid obesity. Gastric bypass surgery as well as lap sleeve gastrectomy can prevent the progression and mortality associated with Type II diabetes in morbidly obese adults. With medical weight loss, most patients lose weight only to relapse and regain their weight. Surgery is a great aid in helping you to reach your goals of living a longer and healthier life.
New York Bariatric Group believes that the most effective long term success in weight loss is achieved by exposing the patient to a multi-disciplinary approach, combining surgery with sound pre-surgery education and superior post-operative support to help patients maximize their weight loss and adjust to their lifestyle change.
