Dr. Nikhilesh R. Sekhar Takes the Lead in Connecticut
Dr. Nikhilesh R. Sekhar has joined our Connecticut New York Bariatric Group branch as the Attending Bariatric Surgeon.
No stranger to NYBG, Dr. Sekhar has worked with us since 2014. He is one of our top surgeons, having performed hundreds of bariatric surgeries. In addition to his work with NYBG, Dr. Sekhar is the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, NY.
Before joining NYBG, Dr. Sekhar was the Attending Surgeon and Surgical Associate of Neenah, Midwest Bariatric Solutions at the Theda Clark Regional Medical Center and Level II Trauma Center in Neenah, Wisconsin and Chief of Surgical Staff at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
A skilled bariatric surgeon, Dr. Sekhar is well-versed in laparoscopic methods of weight-loss surgery. He is a veteran weight-loss surgeon, performing Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, and Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding.
Dr. Sekhar has been published and has presented extensively on laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery.
A native of the tri-state area, Dr. Sekhar grew up in the Bronx, New York and New Jersey. A Johns Hopkins University graduate, he went on to continue his medical scholarship at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ. He returned to the city life for his general surgery training with Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, NY.
Taking some time away from the north, Dr. Sekhar moved to Nashville, TN to complete an Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center; trained by William O. Richards, MD, pioneering surgeon of minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Sekhar not only underwent extensive bariatric surgery training during his time at Vanderbilt, he also became skilled in achalasia and gastroesophageal reflux treatment.
Dr. Sekhar is a well-rounded gastrointestinal expert.
After his Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery fellowship at Vanderbilt, Dr. Sekhar revolutionized minimally invasive cancer surgery while working with gynecologists.
He engineered a robotic surgery program to perform minimally-invasive surgeries.
He went on to grow his expertise in minimally invasive surgery, expanding his knowledge of EGD, colonoscopies, esophageal motility, and reflux testing.
His extensive background in advanced laparoscopic make Dr. Sekhar an invaluable asset to the NYBG team. His experience is highly varied. He is skilled in laparoscopic Nissen for reflux, laparoscopic inguinal and ventral hernia repair, laparoscopic colectomy, and laparoscopic lymphadenectomy.
Dr. Sekhar is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a society member of American College of Surgeons, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
