Meet Kevin Small, MD

Education

Dr. Kevin Small, a board-certified plastic surgeon by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, has a proficiency in the wide breadth of plastic surgery including craniofacial procedures, breast reconstruction, trunk reconstruction, and lower extremity reconstruction. He has additional training and specialization in body contouring, post-bariatric body contouring, facial aesthetic surgery, and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures (injectables, laser therapy, etc.).

Dr. Small has received numerous honors and awards in academics, teaching, and research excellence from the American Society of Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation. Dr. Small has presented his innovative research at local, national, and international meetings; he has innumerable original manuscripts and book chapters in multiple peer-reviewed collections including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Aesthetic Surgery Journal. Topics of expertise include three dimensional imaging, breast reconstruction, body contouring, and aesthetics.

Dr. Small is from Nashville, Tennessee, and received his B.A. in Classics with honors from Washington University in St. Louis in May 2004. Dr. Small received his M.D. from New York University School of Medicine in May 2008.

He completed the combined plastic surgery residency program at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan in June 2014, and an aesthetic surgery fellowship at UT Southwestern in Dallas in June 2015.

Dr. Small is a former Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center and has been appointed as the Director of Plastic Surgery at New York Bariatric Group. Dr. Small is married to Stephanie Kalikow Small, and they have a son, Lucas, and a daughter, Remy.

I feel like a completely different person. I feel stronger. I feel able to accomplish more.

The driving factor behind me getting my procedure was that I couldn't get up off the floor with my granddaughter. That was my why. That was my big reason for having this surgery done. After surgery, it was a little bit of a struggle with what to eat. What you put in your mouth that you don't even think about. You don't think about what you're eating or how you're eating and portion size. It's what I do now every single day. The procedure has changed my life in so many ways. It saved my life.

I am totally comfortable in my own skin.

I think I always grew up identifying myself as less than other people because I was fat. I decided to tackle that and just live my life. I had a sleeve gastrectomy. It changed how I view myself. How I communicate with people. I'm able to be much more of myself and live the life I always thought I should have been living. I am totally comfortable in my own skin.
