Post-Op Bariatric Surgery Diet Plan: Months 6 and Beyond – Final Part of Mini Series

post-op bariatric surgery diet 6 months and beyond imageYou’ve made it beyond the six-month stage.  Congratulations!  You’ve probably lost a significant amount of weight by now, and you know what types and amounts of food your body can handle at any given time.  Now, it’s time to continue on your weight loss journey and feed your body the foods it needs to stay strong, healthy and vibrant.

Sample Foods for Month 6 and Beyond

Through each stage of the plan, Sharon George, MS, RD, CDN has been introducing new elements at specifically timed intervals, and this time you will re-introduce fiber and certain carbohydrates to your diet.  A breakfast may consist of 4 oz. of Greek yogurt and 1 oz. of fresh fruit or a 3 oz. spinach and feta egg white omelet with 2 oz. of peaches.  For lunch, you might have one slice of whole grain bread with two slices of deli meat, tomato, lettuce and 1 tsp. of lite mayo.  Another lunch option could be celery stuffed with tuna and half a banana.

For dinner, you might have 2 oz. of chicken with 1 oz, of couscous and 1 oz. of green beans, or 3 oz. of pork chop with 1 oz. of spinach and half a sweet potato.  Each day, you’ll be allowed one 50-calorie snack, which may vary according to the recommendations of your RD and surgeon.  Many patients enjoy the flavored soy snacks available in the NYBG store.

Maintaining Your Forward Momentum

As the time rolls along and weight melts away, it is important to maintain the momentum you’ve built up to get to this point.  Trust the science that got you here, and allow it to carry you past the six-month mark and into the future.  Perfection is never the goal with a transformation of this magnitude.

You’re still human, and you’ll experience the odd hiccup along the way, but it’s how you respond that makes all the difference.  Guilt, shame and getting down on yourself are no longer part of the equation.  You’ve created a new lifestyle, full of new routines and actions, so if you stray for a moment, you’ll be able to get back on track quickly.  If you don’t feel like measuring and counting at any point, some of our instant meals may be the answer to keep you headed in the right direction.

Checking In at 9 Months

A full nine months after your bariatric procedure, you’ll have an update with your surgeon and the creator of your eating plan, Sharon George, MS, RD, CDN.  You’ll get some more training and education on what to expect moving forward, tips on maintaining your weight loss and possible updates to your eating plan.

The hardest part is over.  You’ve completed the surgery, learned how your new body works and followed through with your diet and exercise commitments.  Now, you just have to keep up your healthy lifestyle and obesity will be a permanent part of your past.

I hit my goal weight ... and I feel fabulous

I had the gastric bypass. I am Type 2 Diabetic and I wanted to gain control of my sugar. I hit my goal weight in about 5 and half months and I feel fabulous. The procedure has completely changed my life for the better because it has empowered me as a middle aged woman that I can really do everything and anything that I want to do. I don't put an age on anything. I don't say I'm too old for something.

Robert's success story

I was tired of the way I looked. I was tired of the way I felt.

I knew if I didn't change something soon, I was going to be in a lot of trouble. The consultation process was a lot easier than I expected. I was met with open arms. I was treated like I was the only patient here. Not only did they answer all of my questions, they had questions for me to make sure I was the right candidate for the surgery. After surgery and that weight started dropping off, my life started changing for the better.

I feel like a completely different person.

I had the gastric sleeve procedure. The driving factor behind me getting this procedure was my health. I didn't feel good physically or mentally. I had joint pains, even standing was difficult sometimes. Emotionally, this surgery completely turned my life around. I have so much more confidence. So much more happiness. I feel like a completely different person. I feel stronger. I feel able to accomplish more.

Eileen's success story

It saved my life.

The driving factor behind me getting my procedure was that I couldn't get up off the floor with my granddaughter. That was my why. That was my big reason for having this surgery done. After surgery, it was a little bit of a struggle with what to eat. What you put in your mouth that you don't even think about. You don't think about what you're eating or how you're eating and portion size. It's what I do now every single day. The procedure has changed my life in so many ways. It saved my life.
